  • Bike Maintenance 101

    Bike Maintenance 101 – all cyclists and/or triathletes need to understand the basics of bike maintenance to ensure your bike is in top shape, and to help you respond if something goes wrong.

  • Cycling Techniques

    This week will focus on different cycling techniques and strategies including cornering, climbing, and big gear work.

  • Cycling Strategy

    Week 3 will give an intro to FTP work, drafting, and hill climbs. These skills will be practiced on the road together with other athletes.

To successfully complete a triathlon is a huge achievement that requires you to have the right skills, endurance and mental toughness.

Why Attend a CFIT Cycling Clinic?

Our goal for the CFIT cycling clinic is to help you prepare for your next cycling or triathlon event. This specific event is designed for those athletes that are beginners or those that might have a little anxiety around open road cycling.

What will the day look like?

Below is a high-level view of the day – with further details below.

  • 8:00am: Meet @ (Coach Clark’s House) / Welcome & Introductions
  • 8:30am – 9:30am: Bike Maintenance 101
  • 9:45am – 10:45am: Coffee & Breakfast Chat (Cycling techniques & strategies) @Piccolo Cafe
  • 11:00am – 1:00pm: Easy ride to practice techniques & strategies
  • 1:00pm – 3:30pm: Free time / Break / Lunch
  • 3:30pm – 5:30pm: TFP work, drafting, and hill climbs

What do I need to bring?

Are you looking to join us in Taupo for the day? We hope so! Below are some items we recommend bringing to make the most of the day:

  • Bike: Be sure to bring your bike whether it be a road bike or TT Bike
  • Cycle Clothing: Be sure to bring some cycle clothing (ideally cycling shorts)
  • Sunglasses & Sunscreen
  • Rain jacket: Who knows what Mother Nature will throw at us!
  • Water bottle(s)
  • Nutrition: Bring your favorite nutrition, snacks, or drink mix for pre-, during, and post-rides (as required)
  • Change of clothing
  • List of questions

What am I going to learn?

Bike Maintenance 101

Bike Maintenance 101 – All cyclists and/or triathletes need to understand the basics of bike maintenance to ensure your bike is in top shape, and to help you respond if something goes wrong. During this workshop, we will cover:

  • Flat tire, tube replacement, and repair
  • Disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of drivetrain components (chain, cassette, crank, and derailleurs).
  • Derailleur adjustments.
  • Brake adjustments and how to bleed hydraulic brakes and straighten bent rotors.
  • How to true a wheel.
  • How to conduct a quick and easy safety check on any bicycle
  • Basic tools for home mechanical work.

Technique & Strategies

During this session, we will focus on different cycling techniques and strategies including cornering, climbing, and big gear work.

  • 15-minute instructional overview of different strategies (cornering, climbing, and big gear work)
  • 15-minute educational session around fueling, long rides, short rides, hill reps, and how to fuel appropriately
  • 1-2 hour cycle from Taupo applying strategies learned 

Race Training & Strategy

During this session, we will cover FTP work, drafting, and hill climbs. These skills will be practiced on the road together with other athletes. 

  • Time trial @ the Taupo Velodrome
  • Post-velodrome ride to Aratiatia dam where we will practice hill climbs
  • Total of 2 hrs of riding and instruction

Group Ride – Cycle beautiful Lake Taupo with CFIT

Workshop attendees all will receive a special invitation to join the CFIT team to combine everything learned during the 1-day workshop, with a team ride around beautiful Lake Taupo! Don’t worry – it’s not a race – it’s a ride that everyone can enjoy together. Below are some highlights of the ride:

  • Ride Distance Approx 160km | Vertical Climb 1728m | Completion – Priceless
  • Over the course of the ride, we plan to stop for food and water (and breaks as needed)
